In the mid-Meiji period, “Kyoto Tokiwa” (Kyoto Hotel) was opened by MAEDA Matakichi, and the garden was designed with yarimizu stream from the Kamo River, an artificial island(tsukishima), and a tea house. It is thought that a water mill for flour milling was in the neighboring house.
From the late Meiji period to the Taisho period (1912-1926), it has become clear that villas such as Baron FUJITA Denzaburo’s “Ebisugawa Residence” and YAMAUCHI Uzaburo’s “Hiyodori-Goten” were built, and that antique appreciate club(kankikai)and tea ceremonies were held at these villas.
