Water Conservancy Heritage (WCH) constitutes vital functional systems intricately linked with the city. It features favorable geographical locations, distinctive landscape characteristics, and cultural and historical attributes that have significantly shaped urban development. Urbanization leads to modern infrastructures replacing traditional urban landscapes, gradually homogenizing them. This study integrates the interaction between WCH and urban areas in various spatiotemporal contexts, utilizing Beijing’s Impounding Lake System as a case study to explore the reasons for construction, landscape evolution processes, and changes in functions in different periods. The study aims to propose strategies for the development and protection of modern water conservancy heritage.
